Allstate 400 at The Brickyard

It was a little bit strange watching qualifying this early Saturday morning, but here are the Top 10.

  1. Jimmie Johnson
  2. Mark Martin
  3. Ryan Newman
  4. Kasey Kahne
  5. Jeff Gordon
  6. Elliott Sadler
  7. Kurt Busch
  8. Jamie McMurray
  9. Carl Edwards
  10. Matt Kenseth

Other notables…Dale Jr (11th), Kyle Busch (19th), and Indy 500 winners Juan Pablo and Sam Hornish qualified 13th and 38th respectively.  Where did Tony qualify?  The #20 qualified 14th.  Is this a sign for Mr. Stewart?  It is strange he qualified in the 14th position after announcing yesterday he would be driving the #14 car beginning next year.  Tony aslo happens to be the highest qualified Toyota.

I am hoping for that #20 to be in Victory Lane this weekend.  I would love to see this scence from last year’s race repeated….

This is the 15th race the NASCAR boys have raced at the famed Indianapolis Speedway.  Here are the previous winners.

  • 1994-Jeff Gordon
  • 1995-Dale Earnhardt
  • 1996-Dale Jarrett
  • 1997-Ricky Rudd
  • 1998-Jeff Gordon
  • 1999-Dale Jarrett
  • 2000-Bobby Labonte
  • 2001-Jeff Gordon
  • 2002-Bill Elliott
  • 2003-Kevin Harvick
  • 2004-Jeff Gordon
  • 2005-Tony Stewart
  • 2006-Jimmie Johnson
  • 2007-Tony Stewart

Of the winners, only two of them have not won a Cup Championship (Ricky Rudd and Kevin Harvick).  From 1998-2001 the winner who won at The Brickyward went on to win the championship in the same year.  Both Tony and Jimmie did the same thing in 2005 and 2006 respectively.  This year’s race will definitely be worth watching.

Even though I have been a restful vacation, I have been keeping up with all the news of NASCAR this past week.

  • Toyota horsepower–asked to reduce theirs that way they are on par with everyone else.  Aren’t the Toyotas using a new model of engine?  As I recall, when a “newer” version of something is put in place isn’t it usually better than the older models?  Oh well..we shall see how all of this will affect Toyota tonight in the Nationwide Series.
  • Newman vs Wallace–are you kidding me?  Why should Rusty Wallace care why the Ryan Newman has left Penske.  It just boggles my mind.  Who really cares why Ryan Newman left Penske?  I would think that would be between Roger Penske and Ryan Newman, not Rusty Wallace.  UGH!
  • Tony Stewart announces car number and sponsors.  This of course was already discussed in a previous post, but hey it was worth mentioning again.

And one final note…I wish this whole Brett Favre thing would just go away.  Reinstate him, sign him and/or trade him, do whatever you need to do to make all of this go away.  Here’s what I see…Brett still wants to play football and the Packers want to move towards the future.  And from this Cowboy fan, I don’t care where Brett ends up.

My Favorite Number is 14

It’s official…Tony will be driving the red and black #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy next year.  Tony chose the number in honor of his racing hero A.J. Foyt.

“A.J. has always been my hero and will always be No. 1 on my hero list, with the best part being that we are really good friends,” Stewart said. “We obviously have a tremendous amount of respect for one another. I remember him calling me after I won my first Cup championship in 2002 and I remember how much it meant to have him call that night and congratulate me. We really do have similar pasts and carry a lot of characteristics that are the same. He is one of the greatest icons in racing worldwide and to be compared to him in any way is always a huge honor.

Now what to do with all that orange in my wardrobe, on my car, fleece blankets that adorned by recliner, etc?  I guess I will have to buy new stuff!  That’s right…for those of you who don’t know what to get me for Christmas, birthday, or just because I will needs lots of new Tony stuff!  I am going to like his car colors as well…red and black!  I am so conditioned to those colors.  I mean after all I am an alum of Texas Tech University and what are their colors???  Plus he will have Office Depot as one of his sponsors.  Talk about a match made in heaven for this Tony fan.  I will definitely be able to support this sponsor more.  I am an office supply junkie.  Oh…for all my male friends and family members guess what brand of cologne, shampoo, etc you will be receiving in your stockings for Christmas?

Now that the number and sponsors question has been answered, next up will be the driver to become Tony’s teammate.

Hello Dolly!

Well, Hello Dolly…that’s right folks Hurricane Dolly slammed into south Texas today.  I usually don’t pay too much heed to hurricanes, but this one I have been watching since it popped up on the weather radar.  My father and step mother live in that part of Texas where Dolly hit.  They are doing ok, but I am still worried about them.  This isn’t the first time I have worried about them with regards to Mother Nature’s wrath.  They were living in Oklahoma back in 1998 when a tornado hit the Oklahoma City area.  Luckily they were able to get ahead of the storm and were safely sitting in a restaurant in a nearby community.

I called them tonight and was able to talk to my stepmother.  She told me she has never seen rain and wind like this in her life.  They were without electricity, but doing ok.  They were also having sustained winds of 50 mph, with gusts up to 70 mph.   She also told me the levees were holding so far.  That’s what I am so worried about.  I have seen what broken levees can do to a community and I won’t want that to happen. The last big hurricane I thought they would have to endure was Hurricane Rita, but it turned up the Texas Coast and didn’t hit them at all.   I will be thinking about them as Dolly moves on down the road.

Need a Pit Crew!

That’s right I needed a pit crew this evening.  More to the point…a tire changer.  As Postman was trying to remove the lug nuts from our SUV, I was saying out loud, “Where in the hell is the Home Depot pit crew when you need them?”  I swear I believe the lug nuts were put on the car with super glue, but Postman eventually got them loose.

Once loose I was able to jack up the car.  Well, at least that’s what that contraption was called.  It was able to lift the car off the ground enough to remove the flat tire and place the new one back on the car.  Let’s just say, this tire change was not under 15 seconds.

I don’t know what caused the tire to go flat.  It was probably some random mystery debris I ran over on the way home from work last Friday.  Or perhaps it was that Jeff Gordon fan I passed and trapped in traffic.  Maybe she threw some random piece of debris out of her window.  This SUV was weaving in out of traffic and cutting people off including me.  When she finally chose the “right line” she managed to get behind a very slow car.  I just had to laugh.  I managed to find the faster lane and well…I was ahead of her and well she was behind me…as it should be.  I know it’s kind of odd that I would do that, but damn the next you cut me off in traffic don’t try to take me out with you.

The boys are off to Indy this week.  I am think I am getting back my mojo.  If any track can get Tony back to Victory Lane it’s Indy.

Still on Vacation

On Friday, I posted that I will be on vacation this week.  I really don’t intend on going anywhere special.  I am just going to sit at home and take it easy.  I will probably watch lots of movies or sit out on my patio and catching up on some reading.  I have a small blow up pool that I might even take advantage of, but other than that I am not on any real time table.  I will probably take one day to organize some things in the household, but this week is about ME!  Sometimes you just have to stop and reenergize yourself.  I hope this is what this week will be about for me.  I will have 8 hours of uninterrupted time…no Postman or LIttle Smoke.  I know that may sound bad, but sometimes you have to take time for yourself.   I haven’t had a chance to do that lately.  So, here’s to my vacation…may it provide me the much needed relaxation and rest so I can get back my mojo.

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N!!!!!

That’s right folks I will be on vacation all next week!!!!  I don’t know how much time I will be spending here in the park, but don’t worry I will be back around for the week leading up to the Brickyard.  And of course, I will definitely be watching for any announcements comign out of the Stewart Haas Racing Camp.

Have a great week!  I will be thinking of those who have to work next week!

Baseball

Since it is an off week for the Cup boys I thought I would take a break from the NASCAR circuit myself.  I am still reading all of my usually sites, but I am taking a break from commenting and posting.  Of course, if some serious breaking news happens, then all bets are off.

I wanted to take this week to write about other interests of mine that most of you may not know about.  Besides being a major NASCAR junkie, I love all things sports related.  Next to NASCAR, football is my next sports passion, followed by baseball.  I love sports so much that I am taking a Sports History course this fall at our local major university.  It is a way for me to combine two things I love…sports and history.  I have several books, in fact it is 6 books, that I am required to read for this course.  Being the ever diligent student that I am, I have the book list and I have already read two of the books and currently reading the third book.  The second book is entitled Baseball: A History of America’s Game” Benjamin G. Rader.  I have to say it was a very intriguing book.  I was visiting with the professor of the course and he suggested I read Game of Shadows.  This is the book that discusses the whole Barry Bonds steroids thing.  I have been holding off even reading this book, but I respect this professor so I decided to give it read.

I used to be a rabid baseball fan almost as rabid as I am about NASCAR.  In fact there was a time I preferred watching baseball instead of football.  I know that is hard to fathom from someone who lives in Texas.  I remember watching the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs on TNT/TBS and WGN respectively.  I was more partial to the Atlanta Braves however.  I can still remember those god awful baby blue uniforms they used to wear.  I remember my father and I would discuss the Cincinnati Reds.  I remember hearing about Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Pete Rose.  I still believe Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame for his on the field triumphs.

But I didn’t really enjoy baseball until I became a fan of Roger Clemens.  I have been following his career since his playing days at the University of Texas.  I followed in to Boston, Toronto, New York, Houston and back to New York.  It has been somewhat difficult for me over the last several months to deal with all the controversy surrounding one of my sports heroes.  I just can’t believe all his accomplishments will be perceived as tainted because of it all.

I have just finished watching one of the best baseball movies of all time…Field of Dreams.  My favorite part of the movie is towards the end where James Earl Jones, who plays Terrence Mann, gives the following speech to Ray…

Ray, people will come Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won’t mind if you look around, you’ll say. It’s only $20 per person. They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh… people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I always get chills up my spine when I hear this speech and I always end up crying at the end when Kevin Costner’s character figures out the voices were talking about him and not his father.  And then when he see his father again and asks him “wanna have a catch”.  And then the two play catch.  I have male friends of mine break down in tears at this movie.  This movie touches everyone on some kind of level.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.  I will be watching the truck and Nationwide racing this weekend and perhaps catch a little baseball.
